Filing your IRS (Portuguese personal income tax return) in 2026 costs between €0 and €450. The automatic IRS on the Portal das Finanças (tax authority portal) is free for simple cases of employment income or pensions. A return filed by a Certified Accountant costs €35 to €75 when it involves only Annexes A and H and standard deductions. Complex cases — capital gains (Annex G), foreign income (Annex J), the IFICI regime (Annex L) or self-employment income (Annex B) — cost €150 to €450. At HVR, a simple return costs from €35.
IRS filing prices in 2026: comparison table
| Option | 2026 price | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Yourself, on the Portal das Finanças (automatic IRS) | €0 | Employment income or pensions, no special annexes |
| Certified Accountant — simple return | €35–€75 | Annexes A and H, standard tax deductions, family household |
| Certified Accountant — complex return | €150–€450 | Annexes B, G, J and L; capital gains; foreign income; undivided inheritances |
What pushes the price up
The price of an IRS return is essentially a function of the annexes involved and the calculation work they require:
- Annex B (self-employment, Alojamento Local short-term rentals): typically adds €50 to €150 — classification under the simplified regime, coefficients and Social Security.
- Annex G (capital gains on property, shares, crypto-assets): adds €75 to €200 — calculating acquisition values, allowable costs, reinvestment in a main residence and offsetting capital losses.
- Annex J (foreign income): adds €100 to €250 — double taxation treaties and the tax credit for each country.
- Annex L (residents under the IFICI regime — the successor to NHR — 20% flat rate): adds €100 to €200 — coordination with Annex J and with registration under the regime.
- Mixed situations: two taxpayers with Category B income, an undivided inheritance or optional aggregation of investment income can push the total to €450.
Automatic IRS: when free is enough (and when it gets expensive)
The automatic IRS only covers standard situations: Categories A and H, no Alojamento Local, no capital gains, no foreign income. Within that perimeter, it is the right option and costs nothing. Outside it, cheap gets expensive: accepting the pre-filled return without review can mean losing deductions, making the wrong choice between joint and separate taxation, or omitting income — and an inaccurate return triggers fines starting at €375. The rule of thumb: if you have doubts about even a single annex, the €35 to €75 fee of a Certified Accountant is cheap insurance.

How much filing your IRS with HVR costs
| HVR service | 2026 price |
|---|---|
| Simple return (Annexes A/H) | from €35 |
| Return with complex annexes (B, G, J, L) | dedicated quote, fixed before filing |
| Clients on a Professional (€300/month) or Premium (€600/month) retainer | included |
HVR publishes its prices because most of the market does not — and opacity always ends up costing the client. Quotes for complex annexes are put in writing before any work begins. Hugo Ribeiro has been a Certified Accountant since 2000 (OCC no. 64356), serving more than 200 clients from Parque das Nações, Lisbon.
Is it worth paying a Certified Accountant?
In complex cases, almost always. Three concrete examples: choosing between aggregation and the 28% flat rate on investment income can be worth hundreds of euros; correctly reinvesting a capital gain on your main residence can exempt tens of thousands of euros of gain; and a badly completed Annex J can double tax that a double taxation treaty would have eliminated. Against a fee of €150 to €450, the return is often 10 to 1.
