NIF Portugal — How to Get Your Portuguese Tax Number in 2026

By Hugo Ribeiro, Certified Accountant (OCC) · HVR Business Consulting · Updated: April 2026

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is Portugal's 9-digit tax identification number. It is mandatory for virtually any financial or legal transaction in Portugal: opening a bank account, buying property, setting up a company, signing contracts, or working as a freelancer.

3 Ways to Get a NIF in Portugal

1. In Person at Finanças (Free, Same Day)

Any EU/EEA citizen can walk into a Finanças office with their passport or national ID card and receive a NIF the same day, free of charge. Non-EU citizens must also bring proof of residence in their home country.

2. By Power of Attorney (5–10 Days)

You grant power of attorney to a certified accountant or lawyer in Portugal, who applies on your behalf. Cost: €150–300. Ideal for people who cannot travel to Portugal. HVR offers this service.

3. Via Fiscal Representative (Non-EU Non-Residents)

Non-EU citizens who are not resident in Portugal must appoint a fiscal representative — a Portuguese tax resident who is legally responsible for your Portuguese tax obligations.
