Twelfths in Portugal 2026: Holiday Bonuses Paid Monthly — Worth It?
By Hugo Ribeiro, Certified Accountant · Member of the Order of Certified Accountants · HVR Business Consulting
Twelfths ("duodécimos") are the fractional payment of Portugal's mandatory holiday and Christmas allowances: instead of receiving each allowance in full, the employee receives 1/12 with each monthly salary. In 2026 the regime is optional and requires an agreement between employer and employee — covering half or all of each allowance. Over the year, total pay and total income tax are exactly the same; only the monthly distribution changes. Without an agreement, the default rules apply: holiday allowance before the holiday period and Christmas allowance by 15 December.

What are twelfths?
Besides 12 monthly salaries, Portuguese employees are entitled to two extra allowances — holiday and Christmas — each worth one month of base pay. Under twelfths, those allowances are paid in 1/12 fractions with each salary instead of as lump sums. The mandatory twelfths regime from the troika years is over; today the split is voluntary and requires a written agreement (unless a collective agreement says otherwise). You can split one allowance, both, or half of each.
No. Allowances are withheld autonomously — they are not added to the month's salary for rate purposes — and that rule holds when they are paid in fractions. Annual income, brackets and final tax are identical; only personal cash flow changes: steady liquidity versus two concentrated "bonuses".
Employer checklist
Formalise the agreement in writing with each employee (which allowances, what proportion);
Check whether the sector's collective agreement imposes or limits the split;
Set up payroll with dedicated line items and correct autonomous withholding;
Reflect twelfths in the monthly DMR return and social security contributions;
On hires and terminations, compute pro-rata amounts net of fractions already paid.
No. The fractional payment requires an agreement between employer and employee (or a collective-agreement provision). Without it, allowances are paid in full on the legal dates.
Do twelfths increase my income tax?
No. Withholding on allowances is autonomous either way, and the final annual tax is exactly the same. Only the monthly distribution changes.
When is the Christmas allowance paid without twelfths?
By 15 December. The holiday allowance is, as a rule, paid before the holiday period starts.
Can I stop receiving in twelfths?
Yes, by revoking the agreement with your employer — normally effective from the following year or as the parties define.
Are twelfths subject to social security?
Yes. Holiday and Christmas allowances bear contributions whether paid in full or in monthly fractions.
